Five or Fifty?

Tonight shortly after Eila went to bed, I prepared a mug of hot cocoa and sat down in the living room with a friend. She was quietly telling me a story, when Eila yells out: "Can you keep it down out there? Some of us are trying to sleep!"

Getting Ready for Fall

Despite the fact that it is still winter with lots of snow on the ground, we are getting ready for this coming fall when Eila Rose will enroll in Kindergarten. She is very excited about that idea. We went and got our registration packet, had her yearly well-child visit and got her forms all in order. In April, we'll attend Kindergarten Round-Up and tour the school. We are hoping for the morning session and Eila is hoping she'll get to ride the bus.

Eila now weighs 39 pounds and is 41.5 inches tall. She's on track to be 5 foot 3 inches. She is perfectly proportioned at the 25th percentile. She proudly announced to the pediatrician that she will be glad to be an olympian even if she doesn't win gold in gymnastics. Eila seemed very surprised to hear that some five year-olds don't know how to ride a two-wheeler or write their name, since she's been doing those things for years now. :)

Five Years Old

Eila is officially a big girl now, but she promises that she will always be Mommy's little girl. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Eila had a very special tea party with her cousins, Kaitrin, Rachel, and Claire, and their American Girl dolls at the Sweet Afton Tea Room. They followed this up with playing fairies and lots of dancing and cheerleading.

Eila made all sorts of plans for eating in honor of her special day; so, we visited all her favorite restaurants: Sushi Ko, Dim Sum (Shangri La), Olga's, Red Robin (for a birthday sundae). She also requested The Breakfast Club, but we made waffles at home instead. We also made a lemon cake at Eila's request and enjoyed it with lemonade in her new tea set.

She told me recently that she doesn't need to be tucked in anymore, but if we really want to read her stories and sing songs, it's okay with her. Eila is very proud of the fact that she was invited to join the Mega Stars class in gymnastics. Her room is messier than ever and she continues to change her clothes several times an hour. She is very helpful around the house and now that she is five will start getting an allowance each week.

The picture of the day feature on the site (including Thaddeus' and Josiah's) will only run until the fifth birthday. You will still see periodic updates here and occasional pictures, but not a daily (or as daily as we've been) picture.

This is coming soon for Eila, so I thought I'd let everyone know.

What's a Website?

I was trying to explain to Eila about her website and how we put pictures for everyone to see.

She responds with, "What's a website?".

And I wasn't sure how to explain it to her. I tried, and that was follow up with "What's a network?", "What's information?", "What's an RFC 791?", and finally, "What's packet switching?". Well, okay, maybe I didn't use those terms.

I'm still not sure how to explain it to a four year old.

The conversation reminded me of one between Michael and Oscar in the office:

Drawing

Eila has recently become very interested in drawing things. She spends hours created beautiful pictures of all sorts of things. She has liked to do art projects for a very long time, but now her creations are representations of real life things. Some of her favorite scenes include the beach or pool, so I think it might be a little bit of dreaming as well...

A Tale of Two Rooms

Here's two pictures taken about 3 seconds apart:

First is Eila's room:

Next is Josiah's room:

If you notice, there is a difference in the cleanliness of the two rooms. More often than not, this is usually how they end up at the end of the day. (Note: this is also after some minor cleaning has been done to both rooms. Yes, both rooms).

Adding

Eila really wanted to play Brian's Mage Knight game yesterday and in order to play, each player selects pieces that add up to 100. So, Brian starts by asking Eila "Do you know how to add?"
"What's add?" asks Eila.
Mom chimes in with "Well, when you have one cookie and then you add another one, how many do you have?"
"Two!"
"That's adding"
Then, Eila turns back to her dad and says very matter of fact "Yes, I know how to add."

Big Stink

After a few weeks with some of her most admired people (big cousins), Eila has a few new phrases and one of them she really seems to like a lot is: Stinkin' ____. She describes almost everything in this way and thinks it is very funny too (Josiah's laughter only encourages this).

Today, Brian was making lunch and used some fish sauce, which really made the house stink. Eila said "What is that stinkin' smell?"
"Daddy is making lunch for himself."
"What is he making? Poop?"

Big Kid

Eila is getting to be a big girl and to prove it she recently (Saturday, July 18) had two very big kid accomplishments.

First, for Easter Eila got a My Moeba toy after months of playing the games and earning the hearts to make her moeba grow, she did it. The top of her toy opened and she got out a smallish, blue strange looking plush toy. She could not be more proud, and immediately wanted to show Kaitrin, a true big kid, her success.

Second, Eila had her first go at riding a bike with no training wheels. We went to the empty parking lot behind a nearby school and took off her training wheels, gave her a quick talk about balance and then gave her a running push and she was off. She did amazing and was able to ride a bit on her own. However, she was terrified of falling and if the bike started to lean at all, she would jump off completely. With a little more practice and a lot more confidence, she'll be riding a two-wheeler all the time, like a big kid.
